First Session Nerves – What to expect!
You have decided to come along, meet us and find out a bit more about what all this running stuff is about but what is actually going to happen on the day?
Before you leave the house make sure you have comfortable clothes on that you can move about in easily. If it feels a bit chilly then our advice is always to wear layers this way if you start to get a bit hot you can take a layer off and at the end when you start to get chilly you can pop it back on. Footwear wise you don’t need a brand new pair of all singing and dancing trainers but you should wear something comfortable that you are able to run in. Later on we can recommend a few places if you would like to upgrade your footwear but for now just a basic trainer that you can move in will be sufficient. Bring some water with you, you won’t be going straight out onto a 5K on your first week, remember it’s a 10 week course but you should still stay hydrated.
When you first arrive at the venue there will be people there who just like you will be too scared to get out of the car and be thinking oh my goodness is this really a good idea, get out of the car!
The team will be there to say hello and point you in the direction of the other new beginners, you can’t miss the team as they wear orange tops with their name on them and they will say Manager or Team Leader on the back! One of the team will then run through a few bits and pieces with all of the new beginners, remember all of you are in the same place so you can support each other.
Once the runners have all been signed in the club manager will take all of the beginners to a secure space to get started, this will normally be a school playground or similar space, you will stay in this environment for the first 4 weeks to build your confidence, muscles and get to know each other a bit better. During the session you will be given some tips and pointers about how to run, it’s all very basic but there is more to it than simply putting one foot in front of the other! The session will consist of interval training which is a mix of running and walking, don’t panic you won’t be running for more than one minute at a time in week 1, you can do it!
At the end of the session you will be taken through a cool down to help you muscles recover from their work out. This time is also used as an opportunity for you to ask any questions about the session and what happens next. We hope this has covered most of your questions but if you have anything else you want to know please ask on any of our club Facebook pages or email us in the office at firstname.lastname@example.org
We look forward to meeting you at club soon!
